First Fridays at the 1890 House
June 7 @ 5:00 pm - 8:00 pmFree
Make the 1890 House Museum a must-stop when you celebrate Cortland’s First Friday, produced by the Cultural Council of Cortland County. We have a new, admission-free event every month. From Victorian Valentine Crafts to our ever-popular scavenger hunts, there is something for everyone in the family. All First Friday activities occur the first Friday of each month, from 5pm – 8pm. Activities are designed as drop in events, so you can visit other First Friday programs!
First Friday Schedule:
February 1st – Build A Victorian Valentine. A DIY craft night with all the materials provided. Our inaugural 2019 First Friday provides lace dollies and Gilded Age cherubs to create your own Victorian Valentine. Finish it off by sealing them with the 1890 House membership seal!
March 1 – I Spy Something Wrong. Our popular Scavenger Hunt returns in March. Can you find the modern day items hiding throughout the museum. It’s up to you to figure out what doesn’t belong. Put your sleuthing hat on at this event for all ages.
April 5th – Victorian Vices (18+). A specialized tour that examines popular vices from the Victorian era. From snuff boxes to temperance, we explore the Victorian’s penchant for having too much fun. Beverages from local breweries available for purchase for those 21 and over.
May 3rd – Player Piano Concerts. Trace American music from 1890 – 1930 with our collection of classic tunes on the player piano. Give the piano a whirl, and become a musician yourself, no expertise required.
June 7th – Scavenger Hunt. The second scavenger hunt of 2019 is a photo hunt in the museum. Can you figure out where our zoomed in photos belong?
July 4th – A Victorian 4th. Our July First Friday program is moved to Thursday, and runs all day. We feature a specialty house tour focusing on 4th of July history. Exhibit pieces include our 47 star U.S. Flag, period holiday recipes for sampling, and patriotic tunes throughout the museum.
August 2nd – Croquet Lessons. The teaser to our croquet tournament at the end of August. A chance to brush up on the rules, and practice your game before entering into Cortland’s Croquet Championship.
September 6th – Scavenger Hunt. In our third scavenger hunt, someone has looted our display cases and now all of our Wickwire Goods are misplaced throughout the museum. Can you help us figure out what to put back into our exhibits, and locate our Cortland produced products?
October 4th – A Wickwire Wake. Kick off a spooky October with the weird, the creepy, and the unusual funeral traditions of the 1800’s.
November 1st – Victorian Parlor Games. Play a variety of parlor games from a time before television and video games. From “Are You There, Moriarity?” to “Reverend Crowley’s Game,” there are plenty of opportunities to let loose your competitive spirit. Beer from local breweries available for 21+.
